June 2007

Next club meeting Monday 2rd July 2007.

June Meeting.

The June meeting was devoted to the AGM and the annual display competition for the Michael Broome memorial trophy. Twenty-one members attended.

Four apologies for absence were received, followed by the minutes of the 2006 AGM which were approved with no matters arising. Next came the Treasurer’s report given by Peter, who kindly stepped in to replace David Pottinger as treasurer. He was pleased to report a healthy surplus of £150 approximately for the year compared to a small deficit of approximately £19 for last year. Following this subscriptions remain unchanged for this year at $14 with an optional £2 per year for tea and coffee at the meetings. The better financial position was due partly to increased auction commission (and a generous donation of auction proceeds) but also due to reduced expenses, especially for speakers. Speakers expenses are always an unknown factor so we cannot predict a similar result next year.

The programme secretary Gavin produced an excellent programme for speakers for the coming year, a copy of which is enclosed with this newsletter.

Next came the Chairman’s report. Frank reported another good year for the club with membership up yet again (from 43 to 44) and very good attendance at meetings averaging over twenty per meeting. Good attendance encourages good speakers and good speakers result in good attendance and Reading remains one of the best provincial Numismatic clubs.

The club President Michael Martin then took the chair for the election of the new committee. As already mentioned, Peter was prepared to take over the duties of treasurer and he and all of the other members of the old committee were re-elected unanimously for another year, namely John, Gavin, Henry and Frank. Neil was re-elected as honorary auditor, Mick as President with Maurice and Graham as Vice Presidents.

Finally, under any other Business, a suitable memorial for David Pottinger was discussed . John had suggested a memorial prize for the skittles of which David was particularly fond. Bryan mentioned that we already had two memorials and this would make it three. It was left to club members to think about and make suggestions to the committee.

The club socials were discussed. It was decided to retain last year’s format for the Winter social and the format for the Summer Social was voted on, with a straw poll being in favour of another visit to a place of numismatic interest (details below). The formal AGM was then closed and followed by the Display competition.

Annual Display Competition.

The annual display competition attracted four entries. Once again the standard of entries was very commendable.

This year Kay was the deserved winner.

Subscriptions

Be reminded that subscriptions are now due. It would be most appreciated if members yet to renew their subscription would please do so at the next meeting. Please see Peter. Membership cards will be sent shortly to paid-up members.

Summer Social

The Summer social will be a trip to the National Army Museum which will take place sometime early in August. They have a collection which is mainly composed of medals but also contains siege coins, tokens and emergency money. A guided tour will be given.
