Chairman's Report 2008/2009 Season
I am pleased to report another succesful year for the club with seven visiting speakers talking on subjects as diverse as "Treasures from the Thames" (Jill Greenaway from Reading Museum), "The Debasement of the English Silver Coinage in 1920" (Graham Dyer from the Royal Mint) plus talks on "Canadian Tokens" (John Roberts-Lewis), "Essex Tokens" (Stuart Adams), "Siege Pieces of Charles I" (Tony Travis), "Numismatic Books" (Douglas Saville) and "The Evolution of UK Coinage - Part II" (David Powell). We also had our regular features, Short Talks by Members ( the standard of which always amazes me), our club auction, our Winter member's evening, our Winter Social and of course, the skittles evening, all of which are very enjoyable and enables "wags" to see what we get up to.
Your committee met five times this year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. Gavin has produced an excellent programme again this year as he has for the previous three. John has produced our monthly newsletter and website, essential to keep everyone informed, especially those who cannot attend the meetings. Alistair, despite living a fair distance away, always managed to attend meetings and keeps our minutes and Peter Hall has the task most of us would like too avoid - namely keeping the accounts, which he does excellently.
Our membershiop has held up at 39 and more importantly, attendance at the monthly meetings averaged over 20. This is important as it enables us to attract good speakers. As often mentioned, Reading is considered one of the premier provincial coin clubs and this is due to the active support of our members. Long may it remain so. The only drawback - if it can be considered as such - is that we have been invited to host the BANS congress in 2011
