Chairman's Report 2007/2008 Season
Reading Coin Club enjoyed another successful year with a slight reduction in membership but still a healthy financial position and the acquisition of a state of the art computer controlled projector. Due to the cancellation of our speaker for May, Michael stepped in with a talk using the new projector and those who attended the meeting were suitably impressed with the versatility and visual impact of the new projector. So, Reading can be said to be fully up to date with the latest technology and hopefully it will encourage speakers, indeed several have now inquired about the availability of such equipment.
Michael's talk was about web sites and coin varieties, during the year we have had six further talks, An Auctioneer's View of Coins and Collectors (Peter Preston-Morley), Publishing and Marketing in Numismatics (Philip Mussell), An Introduction to the Coinage of Southern India (Barbara Mears), Hop Tokens (Duncan Pennock), a second look at Fun with Junk Boxes (Tony Holmes) and The Evolution of English Coinage up to the End of the Civil War (David Powell). In addition on club nights we had the ever popular Club Auction, Short Talks by Members, and a Club Bourse and Member's Evening.
Extra curricula events included a trip to the National Army Museum, the Club Dinner and a skittles evening.
Your committee met formally six times during the year and as an experiment had informal brief meetings at the start of Club nights on two other occasions and I would like to thank them all for the hard work they have put in. John as secretary produces the newsletter each month and looks after the website. Gavin produced a wonderful programme of speakers - a job that entails a mix of persuasion and persistence. Peter kept the books in order and is improving our Banking facilities. Henry has kept minutes at the meetings and provides the refreshments for the Club Bourse evening. Unfortunately, Henry has come to the end of his time on the committee having served a full five years. He has put a lot into the job promoting new ideas and generated a great deal of interest in the club and introducing new members. We shall greatly miss him at our committee meetings, though I'm sure he will still be beavering away in the background.
Of course its not just the committee members who do things and thanks are due to Michael for printing the membership cards, Neil for auditing the accounts and our President and vice president for their behind the scenes support.
Finally, we are fortunate to have recruited Alistair to replace Henry, so that the committee is up to strength for this year. However next year presents a particular problem in that both myself and John are coming off the committee and we shall be looking for replacements over the coming year. I hope Reading Coin Club continues to prosper and flourish as one of the premier Provincial Clubs.
