2004 Display Competition for the

Michael Broome Memorial Cup

There were five entries

'Transport Medallions' Graham

Graham Kirby produced a small display of transport medallions, mostly related to railways. Several depicted steam locomotives, while others included a strike breakers medal, pay checks and Association medals. Interestingly most pieces were obtained either locally or at our club meetings.

'Jane's Coins' John

John's display was a typical teenager collection of mixed world coins put together some 40 years ago. The original collector had become interested in coins following a trip to York where one was able to make a hammered coin. Subsequently numerous relatives and friends contributed various coins. John is cataloguing the coins as found in their various tins and boxes before breaking up the collection.

'Money and Stamps' Gavin

Gavin put on a most interesting display of stamps to illustrate the link between money and stamps. In three distinct groups the display covered

  • Avertising on stamps in the same manner as on some coins, e.g. Pears Soap
  • Security using sets of dots etc.
  • Overprinted stamps for fiscal use

    'Hanbury the Master Baker' Tony

Tony displayed an exceptionally fine series of winners medals for Bakers competitions, awarded in the period 1948 -1956 to W Hanbury of Guildford. For many years the individual was a well-known Master Baker in the Guilford area, where he ran several bakers cum confectioners. In his brief talk Tony gave a wealth of information on Mr Hanbury, whom he knows personally. Mr Hanbury was so successful at these competitions that the opposition made him a judge, thereby improving their chances of winning.

    'Local Numismatics' David

David's display had a theme of local numismatics. Various tokens were shown together with explanatory text. Specimens included early 19th century silver tokens of Reading & High Wycombe, the W Till halfpenny of Slough and several mid Victorian tokens issued by traders and manufacturers. In his remarks David said the first outing of this display was 15 years ago for another club event.

All of the presenters gave a five minutes talk on their display.

The winner was Tony who keeps the Michael Broome Memorial Cup for one year.

    Well done Tony.
