October 19th 2001.

Next club meeting - Monday 4th. November 2002.

The evening is the opportunity for ordinary members to make a contribution to the events held by the club and ensure we remain a thriving and vibrant society. We still need volunteers to give a short talk and this year the best talk will be awarded the Mark Myhill memorial trophy. So come on guys and lets make it an evening to remember. Those willing to give a talk please advise the Secretary at the above number (or any other committee member).

Meetings are held at the Abbey Baptist Church, Abbey Square, commencing at 7.00 p.m.

October meeting

For the October meeting Michael orchestrated one of his very entertaining quizzes. We were split into 6 teams and each given a packet of coins. Michael first asked 3 questions on English coins and then requested we answer some questions on the coins in the packet. After 3 minutes we exchanged the packet of coins, had another 3 questions on English coins and then once again tackled the questions related to the packet of coins. This cycle was repeated for 8 rounds.

The themes of the coins in the packets were:

  1. Roman & Ancient (Name the emperor, what denomination, where issued)?
  2. Tokens (where issued)?
  3. Price in Seaby 1959?
  4. What Denomination?
  5. Euros (what country)?
  6. What date?
  7. What country?
  8. Heads (identity the head of state)?

Generally all the teams did well on answering the questions on English coins. However, as usual Michael inserted some real teasers, eg, What is the date of the lst dated Maundy 2d? Which Monarch agreed to the issue of halfpence and farthing pledges? In whose reign was the Crown first issued? What was the nickname for the double florin? The fun really began when it came to answering the questions on the coins in the packets. For example:

  1. trying to identity the dates of coins in scripts where knowing which part of the writing represented the date was a challenge, let alone what it was
  2. identifying the heads of state of countries in the lower divisions
  3. identifying denominations that are unlikely to be seen at the airport money exchanges

After all the fun and games came the evening of reckoning - and team number 3 were just ahead of team 6. Well done Michael for providing such an enjoyable evening.

Finally it is worth repeating the 1959 prices of coins

There were 18 members and 5 dealers tables.
