June 2002

Next club meeting Monday 1st July 2002.

Meetings are held at the Abbey Baptist Church. Entrance off Abbey Square.

Meeting commences at 7.00pm.

June Meeting.

The June meeting was devoted to the annual display competition and the AGM. 20 members attended, with four dealers tables. Annual Display Competition - there were 5 entries.

All the entrants should be congratulated on their splendid efforts and it was gratifying to have 5 entries. Unfortunately there is only one winner - Maurice, who gets to keep the Michael Broome Memorial Cup for a year. Well done Maurice. Neil won a bottle of wine in the entrants raffle.

This was the AGM and Annual Display Competition. Michael chaired the meeting.

1) Apologies were received from Graham and Rob.

2) Minutes - adjourned

3) Chairman's report

4) Finance report - issued prior to meeting. The treasurer commented that in financial terms we are one member down compared to last year. Club funds remained near static and speakers costs average about £30 per meeting

5) Subscriptions - The meeting voted for a £1 increase in the annual membership subscription to take account of the rise in room rent and the foreseeable reduction in membership. It was decided to keep the payment for coffee as an optional extra. The subscription for the season 2002/2003 is £13, coffee £2 per year payable with the membership fee, food £2 per meeting payable at each meeting.

6) The Program Secretary's calendar for 2002/2003 was read out by Frank.

7) Neil accepted the position of club auditor

8) Frank accepted the post of president; Vice presidents are Tim and Dave

9) The voted committee is John, David, John, Maurice and Michael

10) Other topics discussed included the July social trip to Birmingham, use of club funds, book suggestions for library and future Summer social gatherings.

Frank has spent five years on the committee and under club rules he has to stand down. Thanks to Frank for very successfully carrying out the post of program secretary.

These arrangements will be confirmed at the next club meeting.

Past Events.

The June meeting is always devoted to the Annual General Meeting when the yearly report and accounts are presented to the membership and the next years officers are elected. It is also a time when members express their views on specific issues, make suggestions to the committee for future speaker/events and raise any concerns affecting the club. The evening also includes the annual display competition, the winner being awarded the club cup.

30 years ago the principal area of concern was the difficulty in getting guest speakers of interest to all the membership. The good news was that membership subscriptions rernained at £1. The winner of the display competition was Mrs K Davis.

20 years ago topics for discussion was the declining membership, (although we had 52 members !!) and the club fund surplus which stood at £30.19 following an increase in subscriptions to £4 per annunt Details of the display competition are not recorded in the minutes of the time.

10 years ago the proposal was to raise the subscription to £10. Concern was expressed regarding the need for greater club publicity ( also very true for today?). There were only 4 entries in the display competition, a disappointingly low number. The winner was Barry Greenaway for his excellent display of coin scales.
