Michael Broome Memorial Cup

There were five entries

'Coin Imaging by Scanning' Michael

Michael provided examples of both the originals and the scans for a Victorian Bun Penny and a Medallion. The sacns were of very high quality and in colour. It is now clearly possible to produce print quality productions from the combination of high powered scanning and printing on a home computer.

Michael also warned of the dangers of computers being used to 'touch up' pictures of coins prior to them being advertised on the internet for sale and had examples of the medallion in various colours.

'Rumours' John

The current rumour concerning the 1997 £2 where the Queen has a necklace (the Maklouf portrait) sparked John into producing a dislay of 'Rumours'. These were:

'Countermarked Crowns' Maurice

Maurice presented a display of Countermarked Crowns. He gave the full background behind teh introduction of these coins and explained the of quoted 'Two King's Heads not worth a Crown'

'The Princes of Salzburg' Tim

Tim presented a display of coins, medallions and exonumia connected with the Prince's of Salzburg. The name 'Salzburg' means 'Salt town' and everything to do with Salzburg revolved around the salt mines which were the source of wealth and power in the city.

'Maharajah's Well' David

David presented a medallion produced in 1872, commemorating the building of the Mararajah's Well near Stoke Row. Little is known of the reasons for producing the medallion, some eight years after the construction. The medallion was made in Birmingham.

All of the presenters gave a five minutes talk on their display.

The winner was Tim who keeps the Michael Broome Memorial Cup for one year.

Well done Tim.
